Today's Effingham (IL) Daily News paper carried an article on Canadian National's plans to acquire EJ&E lines and the probable impact on Amtrak service into Chicago. I rode commuter trains into Chicago for over 17 years, and experienced firsthand the bottlenecks, delays, derailments, etc., caused by insufficient rail lines into Chicago's downtown train stations. Improvements are long overdue, especially in the north/south routes into Union Station. I now utilize Amtrak to travel into Chicago, usually during the winter months when weather conditions make rail travel much easier and safer. Mr. Harrison's rather arrogant comments seem to indicate that the loss of Amtrak routes would be inconsequential compared to the benefits the Chicago area would receive. I'm sure he is not alone in this opinion, but many people would nonetheless be affected by the loss of these Amtrak routes, and I believe this should be taken into account when planning these much needed rail improvements. I see no reason Amtrak passengers cannot be accomodated as well as Chicago area commuters. Thank you.
