I am writing to urge the STB to reject the proposed takeover of EJ&E by CN. An increase of trains to 20 or more per day will radically change our environment in a negative way. It will imperil our public safety and destroy a quiet neighborhood with incessant noise. Attempts to mitigate the situation will be extremely costly and will be borne by taxpayers according to an article in the Feb. 13 Chicago Tribune (“….the bulk of the cost would have to come from the federal and state governments, Canadian National President E. Hunter Harrison said at a meeting with the Tribune editorial board”). The interview with Mr. Harrison is notable for its arrogance and highhandedness. He further states “…the CN would abandon the deal if federal regulators impose onerous conditions due to objections from opponents, he said”. Obviously he considers grade separations to be “onerous” while we think they are fundamental elements in a safe environment. He is willing to trade our safety for his profits, an arrangement that we oppose categorically. Please reject this deal ! AS
