Comment EI-5022

Received or sent (printed as 2/11/2008)

Regarding the proposed CN Railroad acquisition of the EJ&E rail line, it is hard to believe, with the overwhelming opposition from the affected communities, why this proposal is even under consideration. Other than lining the pockets of few individuals, it is hard to imagine how a 4-fold increase in the amount of freight train traffic through these communities can possibly be beneficial. The negative impact on noise pollution, traffic congestion, danger to our children, etc. etc. must be clear. Even if these considerations were not enough, the motivation behind this acquisition must surely tip the scale against it. Again, it is beyond my comprehension to see how the American public can benefit from this “freight superhighway” providing rapid distribution of cheap imported products. I think we have all seen recently with the lead-based paint scandal that “cheap” comes at a price! Please deny this proposed acquisition and prevent a reduction in our quality of life!
