Phillis, I write this to you as a very concerned Homeowner, Father, Husband, and Friend to many. My wife and I moved into our new home in Plainfield on Christmas Eve 2004. She was expecting our 2nd son Andrew who will turn 4 this Saturday February 16th. William is our oldest son, he turned 5 on October 27th 2007. They are about 15 months apart. We are planning a pretty large family and friends gathering to celebrate this weekend, unfortunatly with the weather and the fact that it's February, we will be celebrating Indoors instead of out. You see, we spend every moment possible that we can outdoors. From March through November, any time we have a nice afternoon and all of the weekends that allow, we are on our patio surrounded by our Family and Friends. Loved ones.!! I have attached some pictures of some of those great times we had just this past year and I ask you to please take a moment to view them as it is a little glimpse into our lives. If you do take a moment to view the photos, which I hope you do, you will notice that in all of the pictures there are powerlines in the background. Directly under these powerlines is where the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway(EJ&E), Railroad tracks are. The camera was facing west. I tell you all of this because I want you to understand that we are a family, and not just four more people of the hundreds, maybe even thousands that are going to have their every day lives affected by the plan of the Canadian National Railway (CN) to acquire the EJ&E. CN proposes to increase the number of trains on the EJ&E rail line by approximately 15-27 trains per day. Add this to the 7-10 coal / freight trains that already run this line and you can see where I am headed with this. CN also proposes to increase the amount of tracks. Can you imagine almost 40 trains going through your neigherborhood, running every day and night.? Most of these could measure up to 2 miles in length. Can you imagine the traffic backups that will occur at the railroad street crossings in not just our neighborhood, but all along the line. There are several I have to cross everyday. In addition to the increased freight traffic, the cargo will be certain to include hazardous chemicals, poisons, and volatile gases. Heaven forbid one of these trains derail, spilling these toxic chemicals near homes, schools, or recreational area. I hope you understand my concerns and the concerns of many like me. And I hope we can continue to enjoy the somewhat peacful environment we live in. Thank you for your time and attention. Timothy C. Thomas Plainfield, Illinois
