In its December 20, 2007 news release, Canadian National claims to Generate significant environmental benefits, including improved rail safety, for millions of people in the greater Chicago area because of shorter transit times resulting in fewer locomotive emissions, fewer blocked crossings and fewer idling trains." The other view would be that of the thousands of motorists that have to pass numerous EJ&E railroad crossings every day. Right now, the train frequency is low but yet during rush hour, a train can cause traffic back-ups of half a mile on Old McHenry Road, for example, blocking adjoining road arteries such as Midlothian and Quentin Roads. Would any bridges be built at traffic bottlenecks such as Route 60/83 in Mundelein? I respectfully submit that the Board look at this case from an overall transportation view and gauge the impact of the increased train volume on automotive traffic flow in the area. We remember a very tragic accident at Fox River Grove, killing several children on a school bus. At a minimum, railroad crossings should have an extra lane, or better yet, overpasses and underpasses should be stipulated. That would be the real improvement in rail safety. Sincerely, A Local Resident."
