We live very close to the EJ & E Railroad and have many concerns and comments regarding the number of proposed trains to pass through in a 24 hour period. First of all, there were about 5 trains that passed through Feb. 5, 2008 from 10:45 pm - 11:10 pm last night with horns blaring each time - traffic jams may not be an issue, but noise, house rattling, and lack of sleep were. Comments/Concerns - some are overlapping. 1) Safety - no gates at two of the crossings closest to our house - Keating and Montgomery Roads. - children can access tracks from open field very easily. - excess vibration and rattling of main gas line next to our house - may affect stability of gas line. 2) Traffic congestion - already an issue when current trains stop traffic and with more trains, it will only become worse, especially during rush hour - only overpasses and underpasses wil help alleviate this issue, but that is only one aspect of the big picture. Also one of our main roads will be affected drastically - Ogden Ave./Route 34. 3) Noise pollution - last night (10:45 pm - 11:10 pm) in a 25 minute period, about 5 trains went by blaring its horn each time which was loud with the house closed up. In the warmer months it will be worse and we won't be able to open the windows for fresh air. Will we receive compensation for using the A/C all the time??? Will there be fencing put up to block out noise and keep children from accessing tracks??? -currently, the vibrations of the house when trains go by rattles items off shelves. - due to excess vibration and rattling of main gas line next to our house -will the gas line be compromised and directly affect safety of the neighborhood???? 4) Emergency Response Times - will be affected - when there is an emergency seconds are crucial in getting medical assistance or getting to a home/business on fire. 5) Real Estate - value of home will be lowered. Will we be compensated for this??? These are our many concerns/comments - the big picture needs to addressed because unfortunately solving one or two of the above will not make up for the other concerns/comments.
