I strongly object to CNR's proposed acquisition of EJ&E. Traffic currently backs up at the grade crossings in Aurora, IL and will cause gridlock if more trains use those tracks. Emergency vehicles, school buses, commuters will be significantly adversely affected. Pollution in the area will not decline: thousands of cars idling at the crossings or taking circuitous routes to avoid them will increase air/noise pollution. The new high school in District 204 would be right next to the crossing on Diehl Road: train whistles and vibration would disrupt the learning process, while the traffic stopped at the crossing would delay school buses and cars. Drivers already do stupid things to get around the stopped traffic: more trains would only result in more risk-taking and danger. If the sale is approved, millions of dollars would be needed to build overpasses or viaducts at the current at-grade crossings--can the State and Federal governments afford that when there are so many other infrastructure needs? This sale would not benefit anyone in this area.
