Comment EI-4855

Received or sent (printed as 1/31/2008)

CN's proposed acquisition of EJE cannot be allowed to happen without further environmental study on affected communities and without a commitment by the company to allocate an appropriate amount of funding to improve the rail lines, crossings and related aspects of the infrastructure. The amount they are currently earmarking is woefully insufficient. Their plans to increase rail traffic throughout the suburban Chicagoland area may be good in theory (for the city of Chicago); however, there are far too many grade crossings that would need to be changed for their vision to be effectively or productively realized within the next 10 years. Specifically, in the southern suburbs, all north/south traffic would be crippled except on major highways and on Cicero Ave., where a railway bridge currently exists. Beyond the immediate traffic problems would be significant economic ramifications, which could be devastating to an already struggling community--not to mention the inherent safety, noise and environmental concerns. The plan, as it now stands, is inadequate and must be reviewed and rethought with the public's best interest in mind.
