I absolutely do not support the proposed acquisition of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway. If CN purchases the railway, we will see a major increase in noise and traffic congestion with the proposed addition of 24 to 27 trains daily. More worrisome to me is the potential for increased train accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians as well as an increased chance of chemical leaks (I have read that CN will transport chemicals, petrochemicals and steel). The thought of more hazardous cargo running so close to hundreds, if not thousands, of residences is frightening. Additionally, I am concerned that the fact sheet distributed to the public regarding current train accidents and fatalities is not accurate; there was a fatality at the Liberty Street crossing in Aurora last November and that was not included in the study. It makes me wonder if there are other accidents not accounted for in the documents distributed to the public? We should be making the railways safer, not adding more trains with more dangerous cargo.
