Comment EI-4001

Received or sent (printed as 1/23/2008)

I am Vice President of the Poplar Creek Valley Concerned citizens representing over 1,000 residents in the Fox Valley. Several years ago, PCVCC was successful in preventing an ill advised freeway system through the heart of the Fox Valley. At that time, I advocated mass transit such as rail instead of the highly inefficient and pollution causing single vehicle travel. Since then, the Star Line was proposed as a sollution to traffic congestion. Now, CN wants to purchase the EJ&E Line to reroute and increase frieght train traffic to 25.5 trains per day (up from the present 5.5 trains per day). This is unacceptable for two reasons. One, it will be incompatible with the kind of rail service that the Star Line would provide. Two, it would increase rail traffic to the point that it would snarl the already congested roadways in Fox Valley with increased delays caused on at grade crossings. If CN is to own and operate the EJ&E Line, they should at least be limited to no more than twice the existing rail traffic and be limited to the length of their trains. Five times the present traffic is simply unacceptable.
