Docket No. 35087 The proposed purchase of Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway Company by Canadian National Railway Corporation and Grand Trunk Corporation will have devastating impacts on several thriving and still developing suburban Cook, Will, and DuPage communities. In south suburban New Lenox, the railway will intersect major thoroughfares that access the newly completed 355 extension, competing with projected gains from that costly undertaking. Most concerning to New Lenox residents, the trains will be operating at extreme speeds, and carrying alarming amounts of hazardous waste, in dangerous proximity of - in some cases mere yards from - schools and residences. And trains operating as frequently as projected (hourly, if 28 or more daily) will disrupt traffic, increase congestion in already problem areas, and worse hinder police and emergency services. Burdens this sale will reportedly alleviate in Cook County will simply be replaced by burdens in affected communities. Noise and pollution alone will force thousands of nearby residents to flee affected areas. Ultimately it will impede growth and prosperity of Will County, one of fastest growing counties in the state, and negatively impact quality of life for hundreds of thousands of taxpayers.
