With funding in place to increase Amtrak speeds in the Chicago / Joliet areas, would CN's trains interfere with Amtrak's plans and the federal funding received for improvements ? i.e., could Amtrak travel at these speeds or would CN's frequent trains interfere? Amtrak gets federal money to improve Chicago routes September 30, 2008 at 2:11 PM | Comments (0) Amtrak trains will be able to travel as fast as 110 m.p.h. within about a year on portions of routes from Chicago to St. Louis and Chicago to Milwaukee under federal grants announced today. The funding will help Illinois and Wisconsin to modernize track-signal and train-control systems, reducing travel times and delays. The improvements will give locomotive engineers precise real-time information about track conditions ahead. For instance, by knowing from sensors that gates and warning lights are operating properly at railroad crossings and no vehicles are blocking the tracks, trains can maintain top speeds through the crossings. Illinois will receive $3.8 million for improvements planned on the Chicago-to-St. Louis route between Springfield and Joliet. A state match of the same amount is required to leverage the federal grant announced by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Wisconsin was awarded $5 million to boost Amtrak speeds on the popular Hiawatha trains between Milwaukee and Chicago. The state must also provide matching funds.
