RE: STB Finance Docket No. 35087 Ms. Phillis Johnson-Ball: As a resident of a community that will be greatly harmed by the increased number of freight trains that would operate through the area if Canadian National Railway (CN) is allowed to purchase the Elgin, Joliet &Eastern Railway Company (EJ&E) rail line, I urge you to deny the CN’s request to purchase this rail line for the following important reason: * stability and safety of the KinderMorgan gas pipelines and Enbridge Energy crude oil pipelines The proposed acquisition would increase the gross tons of freight that moves through the City from the current rate of 14,397 tons per day to 184,969 tons per day. This is an increase of 170,572 tons per day. The increased tonnage combined with the increased volume of trains will create strong and persistent vibrations that will constitute a nuisance and a danger to homes and other buildings near the EJ&E rail line. I do not believe that the DEI identifies nor addresses the above issue. I am very concerned that my community will face significant hardships by the huge increase in train traffic, including major economic losses, extensive traffic gridlock, harm to wildlife and the environment, severe reduction in emergency response times, and huge increases in noise and vibration from the trains. Please take these concerns into consideration and deny the CN’s request to buy the EJ&E line.
