September 30, 2008 Subject: HR 6707, Taking Responsible Action for Community Safety The current proposal for Canadian National Railway to acquire control of Elgin, Joliet and Eastern West Company has numerous flaws. This proposal should not be supported! Please stop CN now! CN’s abysmal Safety Record is well documented. Adding many mile-long freight trains to an already congested local road system means first responders will be delayed at crossings, threatening the health, lives, and safety of all local residents. Our area relies 100% on ground water. Hazardous material spills will have a devastating impact on our communities. School buses cross these tracks hundreds of times each day. CN’s proposal, if approved, will most certainly put children’s safety at risk. It will also result in altering school and family schedules due to increased congestion on our already overburdened local roads. It is wrong to support CN’s proposal at face value, yet this is exactly what is being done in order to rush this proposal through. We urge you to carefully consider the concerns of our local Police, Medical Emergency Providers and Fire Departments who also oppose this acquisition. Therefore, we support HR 6707, the “Taking Responsible Action for Community Safety” Act. We urge you to do the same in order to in order to protect the safety, health, property vales, and business interests of the local area. Thank you.
