As a Realtor with RE/MAX of Barrington, I strongly urge rejection of CN's purchase of the EJ&E rail. This purchase, and the significant increase in rail traffic through Barrington, would negatively impact the personal and financial health of this community. The increased vehicular traffic congestion would hinder the ability of emergency crews to reach their destination even if they do not get caught at a railroad crossing. With each new train comes greater congestion that will not be relieved so even in the event that an emergency vehicle is not stopped at a crossing, they will likely face a much longer response to an accident of any kind. Financially, the increased congestion and noise will only negatively impact property values. Barrington is a destination" community (people want to move here) which is a major reason why this community has such stable market values. The increase of rail traffic by 20 - 25 trains per day would eliminate this designation and cause property values to drop. The current housing crisis that we are in is likely to remain unsteady for approximately five years. The housing crisis also shows how this can impact the ecomony as a whole. Please do not allow this purchase to go through and jeopardize the health and financial stability of its citizens."
