I opposed the Canandian National aquisition of E,J & E Railroad. The mitigation monies offered by Canadian National are altogether insufficient to the need. This Railroad crosses 5 major highways and the Metra line. Freight trains could close up to four of these roads AT THE SAME time cutting emergency access and creating huge economic impact in the form of traffic jams. IL Route 59 is a major truck route which will also have an economic impact. Most importantly, this line runs within 600 feet of a very large high school and will GUARANTEED cause the death of some number of students who drive or walk to school unless that road and sidewalk are raised or the track is run underground. Since this is in the middle of town, I cannot see how appropriate mitigation can be done without a VERY significant investment of dollars (say $50 million) which MUST BE an upfront part of the price paid by Canadian National.
