The Canadian National plan to use the EJ&E as a bypass for freight traffic will severely impact the communities that have railroad traffic crossing multiple intersections within a small square mile area. Several of the railroad crossings cross a single lane road or highway in our communities. Traffic backs up for miles during peak travel times due to the trains crossing. When the EJ&E train crosses Route 60 in Mundelein, I am stuck in traffic. I have been late for work and appointments in the morning, afternoon and evenings. On two occasions, the trains have stopped on the tracks and did not move. The waste of time is one loss, the waste of gas is expensive at $ 4.05 a gallon and all the automobile fumes are not good for the village’s residents or environment. The EJ&E trains that cross Route 60 in Mundelein also cross Butterfield Road and Route 45. These three main arteries all within a short distance of each other provide access to the main hospital in the area, Condell Hospital in Libertyville. Should I ever have a medical emergency during a train crossing, I can NOT get to the hospital without taking the longer route. Emergency vehicles are also limited to available routes when one train crosses three roads. If Canadian National wishes to invest in the United States, then they should invest in the communities that are affected by increased train traffic. Widen roads, underpasses, ensuring that no derailment occur will protect the residents of the communities. Decreasing train traffic in one area while increasing train traffic in another area still impacts the American people.
