FD 35087 · CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAY COMPANY AND GRAND TRUNK CORPORATION--CONTROL--EJ&E WEST COMPANY

Comment EI-11994

Received or sent (printed as 9/18/2008)

I am a resident of Bartlett, Illinois and strongly object to CN's Proposed Action, and will be drastically harmed thereby. The EJ & E rail line extends through Bartlett, not far from where I live. I wish to state my strong objection to the proposed purchase of the EJ & E West Company by the Canadian National Railway, and to the Draft Environmental Impact Statement. As I'm sure that you are aware, the issues at hand grossly impact residents and businesses in a negative manner. Environmental concerns such as spills, noise, and air quality have not been sufficiently addressed by Canadian National. Other socioeconomic concerns include traffic congestion, public safety, property values, interference with the Stearns Road Bridge which is in the early stages of construction, interference with the proposed Star commuter line as well as current communter rail traffic, and first responder access to the west side of town. As a former police officer, now a mom with two children and another on the way, I recognize the importance of having access to emergency personnel - or should I say having assurance that they have access to us. A few moments could mean the difference between life and death. As a police officer, it is a terrifying moment to be called out for a choking baby or a house fire with occupants inside. It is heart-stopping when you roll up on a rail crossing only to discover that your route is obstructed by a passing freight train and you can't get to where you need to be in sufficient time. Many families, including mine, reside on the west side of the tracks. The fire department is on the east side. It would be a tragedy should any one of us be in need of emergency services and not be able to receive potentially life-saving attention due to a blocked rail crossing. I thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, Sherry Hartmann
