Comment EI-8725

Received or sent (printed as 8/19/2008)

The following comments are meant for the upcoming division concerning the abandonment of the CORP rail line in Coos Bay. The recent articles concerning this decision suggests an increase in fuel costs and additional trucks on our local highways. What is not mentioned is that most of the trees, in the form of trucked logs, come from inland sources that would be better served by existing mills closer to the resource source. What is also not mentioned, is the fact that the few interested parties trying to keep the rail line are only interested in the additional profit they make by keeping their mill work in a depressed area using cheap rail service and eliminating the need for trucks and drivers. There has been a lot of discussion by the interested parties who are trying to keep the discussion along lines that make it look like all their ideas are for the good of the locals. This in not true. If the rails were removed, the resulting vacant land would be very valuable to the local economy as tourist related sites. This area no longer depends on logging and fishing as it has in the past and must look at the future. Tourism is the future for all of the Oregon Coast. Most areas are already well on their way to achieving those goals. Coos Bay needs to become a major player. Removing the rails will greatly advance that decision and benefit most, if not all, of the local taxpayers. Please keep the majority of us in mind, not the minority. Thank you, Gene Holt, Coos Bay
